Handyperson Services

Help with everyday odd-jobs

Independent Futures provides handyperson services, run by our Care & Repair agencies, for home owners and tenants who are vulnerable because of age, disability or other risk factors. These services are designed for minor repair and maintenance jobs. Some examples could be:

  • Handyperson fitting key safefitting doorbells
  • replacing fuses and plugs
  • unblocking sinks
  • putting up curtains, shelves and pictures
  • moving small furniture
  • replacing small window panes
  • changing tap washers
  • renewing bath sealant
  • fitting door chains, locks and key safes
  • fitting smoke alarms.

This gives an idea of the sort of jobs handypersons undertake, but they are very versatile and will tackle most jobs that will take less than approximately two hours.

Definitely no job is too small for the handyperson service – even changing a lightbulb!

There are some restrictions on the type of work we can carry out. For example, work over a certain height, anything other than very basic electrical work, repairs to kitchen appliances. If you're not sure if your work is suitable for the handyperson, just give your local office a ring and they will advise you.

Handyperson and clientThe handypersons are all employed directly by our Care & Repair agencies and have a wide variety of professional experience in the building trades. They are all checked through the Criminal Records Bureau so a vulnerable person can use the service with confidence.

There is a low charge for the handyperson service which varies according to whether or not you are in receipt of a qualifying means-tested benefit, and which area you live in.

The handyperson services are available across Mid and West Cornwall and Plymouth. Please click on your local agency for current charges and contact details.
